Video Shows Mysterious Explosion Rocks Coastal Town, ‘Scaring Residents’ Lives’

A coastal town was in turmoil this morning after the latest in a series of mysterious ‘explosions’ shook the community overnight. Security cameras captured the moment a blinding flash was followed by a thundering sound at 3.48am.

Watery-eyed residents of Llanfairfechan, Conwy, say their sleep has been disturbed by loud bangs on several occasions in recent weeks – but this morning’s ‘explosion’ was the loudest yet. “A hell of a blow! was the consensus on the city’s Facebook forum.

Some people in Dwygyfylchi also said they heard the noise this morning and there were second hand reports that it could even be heard as far away as Colwyn Bay. People are afraid to go to bed at night.

“It sounded so loud and close, I almost jumped out of my skin,” one person wrote. “Scared my life!” says another. A resident commented: “I ran out thinking something had exploded, it was scary.

The local community now wants North Wales Police to investigate. A resident said: ‘I’ve been woken around 4am several times by something similar over the last few weeks, but it seemed a lot closer than usual. Another commented: ‘No fireworks or guns would light up like this – it was huge! Need to review.

Shortly after the ‘explosion’ this morning and unable to get back to sleep, one person said something had to be done before it was too late. “It was way beyond! My heart is still racing!” she said. “That could scare someone to death!!”

A resident said he heard a dog “howling in pain”. However, others said their pets reacted in different ways. “Not a gunshot or fireworks because my dog didn’t freak out,” one owner said. But another replied: “Scaring my poor foolish dogs!”

Several theories have been put forward about the mysterious explosions. Most people think it was too loud for a shot. Some suspect fireworks, others bird scarers, although these have been largely ignored.

Other possible explanations offered include quarry explosions and flares from lifeboats. Others suspect work on the coastal railway line. Lightning strikes have also been suggested – but none were reported over Llanfairfechan last night.

A popular theory, though unlikely, is that it was a meteorite landing nearby. Pedro Griffiths, one of the many villagers to have filmed the explosion with his security camera, plans further investigations: tonight he will point his camera upwards to see if the sky delivers answers.

For most people, it’s a permanent mystery. “Why does it happen at the same time every night?” was a comment. “It can’t be a meteor, or a random fireworks display, it’s always planned. So strange.”

For one resident, it brought to mind another explosive event that happened in North Wales. He wrote: “Reminds me of what happened in Denbigh a few years ago when someone started making their own explosives they had to bring in the army to find out who it was after he blew up someone’s house.”

Above all, the community just wants to put an end to the explosions, whatever the cause. One person spoke for many when they said, “Sick of those bangs!”
