Viral TikTok video shows tailgate party in hospital parking lot as family awaits baby

The birth of a baby is an exciting time not only for parents, but also for extended family and friendswho in the pre-coronavirus era, often flocked to hospital waiting rooms to wait out labor.

But with many hospitals here in Australia and around the world now imposing strict limits on visitors, people are coming up with new ways to welcome a family member.

A TikTok video depicting a twist on the US custom of a ‘tailgate party’ has gone viral after family and friends converged on a hospital car park for three days and refused to leave before the newcomer was born.

An artist who bears the name CharisHernandezArt on TikTok uploaded the video this week, which documents her family preparing for a birth.

The video begins with her walking into a craft supply store and picking out some cardboard and textas. On the screen, she wrote, “My sister is having a baby, but due to COVID we hung out outside her hospital room,” adding, “Watch till the end, it’s worth it!” (Watch the video above).

The video then cuts to the hospital parking lot, where people are sitting in the cargo area of ​​a ute, relaxing and eating strawberries, with the time displayed at 7 a.m.

The next scene shows people making motivational signs at 10 a.m., which are then displayed on the front of vehicles and include the words “Eviction Notice”, “Push it!” and happy birthday”.

The next scene shows two couples chatting and laughing in the sunshine outside the hospital. “I must see the parents-to-be before the battle” is written on the screen as the camera zooms in on the baby bump and the word “baby” flashes across the screen.

The video then shows other family members and friends arriving at the hospital with the caption “Moral support showing up!”. A man wearing a “grandpa” shirt is among those waving to the camera.

Some people sit in camp chairs in the parking lot while others lie in the back of a ute.

A man is then represented walking towards the group. “Father’s update. 5pm!” is written on the screen, followed by “Security has been called so we have made a disclaimer”. A sign reads ‘We are expecting a baby here’.

It is now dark and more and more people have gathered in the parking lot. “No more moral support. 11pm” reads the caption before the scene changes again. “Day 2! 27 hours of work! Poor sister.

Soon the second day is coming to an end. “Update from Dad part 2 – getting closer. 7pm.”

As of 11 p.m., they are still awaiting news as the video shows more people arriving to provide moral support. At midnight, someone uses binoculars to focus on the room. “Trying to see movement for clues,” reads the caption, followed by “It’s happening. Getting closer.”

At 5 a.m. on Day 3, a caption reads “Preparing music for now” as the song choice, The circle of lifereached a crescendo.

She uploaded the video with the comment: “They called security for waiting for us outside the hospital! and a number of hashtags including #storytime, #birthstory #circleoflife #longbirth #tailgatebirth.

It has so far been viewed 8.1 million times and received 1.6 million likes and 13,700 comments.

Many commenters admitted to crying at the end of the video.

“Here I cry. It was amazing. Baby is lucky to have such an amazing family,” one wrote. “When this baby was lifted out the window, I smiled the biggest smile ever. What a beautiful memory for you and your little baby to look back on. Congratulations.”

“Why did I burst into tears when they held the baby? I knew it was coming,” said another. “I must be hormonal because I’m crying,” wrote another.

“I don’t know why but it literally made me scream as soon as he showed the baby,” said another and “Literally crying…this is my new favorite video.”

While some said they knew how the video would end, others said it was a surprise. “I didn’t expect the window! I literally did my whole day.”

Others loved the support the new mum received and said it was lucky to be born into such a loving family.

“I wish I had this kind of village,” said one. “OK this was the cutest video ever. I love the support this mom has had!” said another, and “All women should have this level of support and love! Incredible.”

Tailgate parties are popular in the United States and often occur in stadium and arena parking lots, before and after sporting events and concerts, and see people gather to share food and drink.
